Fire, Soot & VOC Investigation
Document fire-related contamination and potential pathways through your building.

UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS
A closer look at your assessment.
Fire damage can create environmental health concerns long after flames and visible smoke have cleared. Combustion can generate soot, char, ash, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other combustion-related residues that may migrate through HVAC systems, wall and ceiling cavities, cracks, penetrations, porous building materials, and other pathways. BNF evaluates and documents potential contamination through detailed observations, targeted sampling, and environmental data interpretation to characterize affected areas and potential exposure concerns. Findings can support remediation planning, restoration, industrial hygiene decisions, and insurance-related documentation, where applicable.

ASSESSMENT SCOPE
What your assessment
may include.
- Surface combustion-residue sampling
- Soot and particulate assessment
- TVOC measurements
- TMVOC assessment where applicable
- Targeted VOC analysis
- Combustion-related chemical marker assessment
- PAH assessment where indicated
- Building-material contamination assessment
- HVAC and potential migration-pathway evaluation
- Targeted lithium-ion battery fire chemical/combustion-marker assessment where indicated
- Environmental documentation for insurance and restoration planning
WHAT TO EXPECT
From your first question
to your final report.
- 01
Scope & Quote
Tell us the property address, year built, current and historical property use, fire or smoke event, affected areas, known concerns, and intended use of the report. BNF establishes the appropriate investigation and sampling scope.
- 02
BNF Environmental Investigation
BNF professionals document fire, smoke, soot, char, ash, odors, affected materials, potential migration pathways, and other environmental conditions. Targeted sampling is performed where warranted.
- 03
Laboratory Analysis
Where laboratory testing is appropriate, samples are collected using documented procedures and chain-of-custody protocols and submitted to appropriately accredited laboratories for the applicable analytical methods.
- 04
CIH Review & Report
BNF's Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) evaluates applicable environmental and exposure data, where appropriate, and the report documents findings, analytical results, potential exposure concerns, and recommendations supporting restoration, remediation planning, insurance documentation, or other project needs.

A CLEARER START
Questions & answers.
Can BNF investigate lithium-ion battery fires?
Yes. BNF can develop targeted environmental investigations for e-bike, scooter, electric vehicle, energy-storage, and other lithium-ion battery fire incidents based on the event characteristics and project requirements.
Can BNF support re-occupancy evaluations?
BNF can provide environmental testing and documentation to support re-occupancy or habitability-related evaluations where requested.
